EMDR Intensives
— Life has its challenges.
Healing doesn’t have to take months or even years.
EMDR Intensives
EMDR Intensives may be right for you if:
- You want to get to the root of your problems and heal those instead of using band-aids and haven’t been able to with your current therapist. Maybe you’ve made some progress with talking about the difficult parts of your life, but there’s still one thing holding you back from fully healing, so you’re curious about how EMDR intensive therapy can help.
- You have been thinking about getting therapy, but the thought of having to work your schedule around weekly therapy appointments feels more overwhelming than supportive.
- You are seeking relief -right now, and you don’t want to spend months or even years in the traditional weekly model of therapy treatment to feel better.
What to expect during an EMDR intensive session:
With EMDR Intensive treatment, you get accelerated therapy designed with your needs in mind so that you can get results sooner than later and get back to living the life you desire. The intensive is one-on-one with an EMDR-trained therapist over a secured telehealth video platform and consists of three parts.
Part 1:
A 90 minute pre-intensive clinical assessment to assess for candidacy, discuss your treatment goals and concerns bringing you in for treatment, as well as, identify limiting beliefs, triggers, and past experiences that still need soothing and attention.
The pre-intensive clinical assessment can be accelerated further with the customized client workbook, which often allows for more time during the Intensive for resourcing and reprocessing. If you choose a workbook option, then the workbook will be emailed to you 2.5-3 weeks before the intensive. This will provide you with at least 2 weeks to complete it and be emailed back to the EMDR-trained therapist at least 5 days before the Intensive to review before the Intensive day.
Part 2:
Half-day intensive: 3 hour intensive session with 2.5 hours spent on developing resources, specific techniques and skills to help you regulate emotions, feelings, and/or body sensations and/or reprocessing a chosen target memory.
The last 30 minutes will be spent on closing the session. The client will be asked to allow themself to notice any changes and new connections and keep a log during the week. The log should document any related material that may arise. The therapist and client will review the client's self-care commitment plan to ensure responsibility to self after an intensive EMDR therapy session.
Part 3:
90 minutes post-intensive session 1 week after intensive to assess and support your adaptation to positive changes from treatment.
Note: Depending on your specific needs and treatment goals additional EMDR therapy appointments may be needed. Ongoing intensive EMDR is available if you are wanting long-term support towards several treatment goals.
RESEARCH ON INTENSIVE EMDR THERAPY IS POSITIVE
- Intensive application of trauma-focused therapy seems to be well tolerated in patients with PTSD, enabling faster symptom reduction with similar, or even better, results, while reducing the risk that patients drop out prematurely. Learn more here and here.
- Intensive EMDR treatment is feasible and is indicative of reliable improvement in PTSD symptoms in a very short time frame. Learn more here.
- An intensive program using EMDR therapy is a potentially safe and effective treatment alternative for complex PTSD. Learn more here.
- The economy is compelling: even compared to other trauma therapy, the intensive format may decrease treatment time, because of time not spent on a) checking in at the beginning of each session, b) addressing current crises and concerns, c) focusing on stabilizing and coping skills that the client won’t need after trauma healing, or d) assisting the client in regaining composure at the end of the session.
